BukBuk...BuhKuk

I've been chickenless for three years. But, I'm soon to be back in the saddle. I ordered chicks yesterday...a very rare 'heirloom' breed called "Buckeyes" (see below). They are a deep, vibrant, mahogany brown, possessing docile, outgoing, friendly personalities. They're hardy and love 'free-range' living. My type of chicken! My baby chicks will need a new coop, so that too is in the works. I've been looking at several styles and with the help of a carpenter-friend, we'll come up with something just right. It'll be CUTE too...a 'farmgirl folk-art' style coop with 'junk' accents and recylced materials. I'm excited!! Lord willing, I'll be loving on fluffy little chicks next month. Becoming part of the MaryJanesFarm team stoked my longing for having cluckers again.  My mother and grandmother love chickens too. My mother has a wonderful antique print in their living room...a small girl setting a dish of water down for a baby chick. The picture hung in her parent's house too. My grandmother told my (now 75 year old) mother that her first words were, "Chickie dink." I guess is runs in the family.

I want to get chickens again too, been without them for about the same time as you. Where did you find the heirlooms? We love heirloom anything!

Our local feed store had buckeyes this spring. I wonder if they still have some? Ha! That's just what I need- to go buy more chicks!! :)

My heart be still, these are the most beautiful chickens! I come from a long line of chicken lovers too. I don't know how I ended up in a neighborhood that is chickenless :-(
